Tharros House, located steps away from the center of Lexington, spans 4 levels with almost 8000 square feet of living space. All client guest rooms at Tharros are equipped with queen sized Serta Presidential Euro-top premium mattresses and high thread count linens. Vanderburgh House, a supporter of Sober House Directory, builds sober home communities where residents are supported in their recovery journeys. Vanderburgh House sees a world where every person in recovery has access to a supportive, healthy, and safe home environment built on respect, focused on recovery, and lead by peers. Residents live together as a family to develop the tools and strengthen their character in order to live free from substance abuse.
That’s why we encourage our clients to consider staying 6 months to one year. Our experience has been that once our clients arrive at Tharros tharros house House, they understand and feel the benefits. You are not locked in to any long term agreements, but we do ask that you come planning to stay for at least 60 days. After your initial period at Tharros, you may wish to explore our less structured home, Teras. When teaching cooking with “my guys”, I am not a professional cook; I am a human being, cooking. Just because we may dump too much cinnamon in an apple turnovers doesn’t mean we aren’t “good enough”; we just let it go and move forward. I don’t want them to be tense with feelings of pressure to do it the “right” way or feel shame if they do it “wrong”. I want to leave room for creativity and mistakes and self acceptance because these are all part of life.

Successful long-term recovery is more than just abstinence from substances it’s a lifestyle change; replacing negative or unhealthy behaviors/patterns with positive coping skills, healthy routines, community and support. We believe life balance, structure, engagement, social interactions, positive perception and challenging old behaviors/beliefs are the key to a successful recovery. We support all paths to recovery and assist our clients to build a foundation for independence and a successful transition.

Clients of Teras may also be involved in outpatient treatment while they develop a foundation in their recovery work, and apply to work positions. After 30 days, clients are expected to be employed while they continue progress in their recovery work. They continue to meet with their case manager weekly and participate in community support activities. Teras, also located in Lexington MA, offers a less structured, but still supportive model of high standards sober living. After spending much of his career in retail where he managed for Mobil, Circle K and Home Depot, Nick joined the Tharros Team in February of 2018, making the decision to follow his passion of helping men in recovery.

At Tharros House, a custom approach to each client is taken, starting with a full understanding of each client’s needs. Their team connects with each client’s clinical providers to help understand what supports are needed before he arrives at Tharros. Dr. Zarnegar brings a wealth of intuitive and insightful knowledge rooted from a quarter century of clinical experience.Dr. Zarengar received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, from California School of Professional Psychology and a Psy.D. When you arrive at the house, you will undergo an initial discussion and orientation with the Program Director, including a dialogue on the past events that led you here. Together, we will start discussing what you want to achieve by engaging the support at Tharros. There are general rules of the house that everyone is required to follow.
Nick earned a place on the First Team All Stars in both Junior and Senior years for Lacrosse. Early on in recovery, Nick began reconnecting with his passions of playing Hockey, and enjoying the outdoors. Teras and Tharros are not affiliated with any clinical treatment (IOP/PHP, etc.) and our focus is on helping each client engage the best clinical support for their own circumstance. We have many local connections, including McLean Hospital, and we help clients who don’t have clinical supports in place connect with appropriate resources. A study of 300 individuals whom resided in Sober Living Homes (SLH) was published in 2010 by a division of the NIH (National Institute of Health) (Douglas L. Polcin, 2010).
He spent13 months in the Tharros community, giving him a unique ability to relate to theclients he works with. He worked as an actor and teacher in theBoston area before finding a passion for working with other recovering addicts andalcoholics. Inside of his work at Tharros House, he has found the empathicconnection and capacity for change he was always looking for in acting.
